If you ask a person if they enjoy doing puzzles, you will likely receive a positive response but they may not be thinking of the same type puzzle as you. The range and types of puzzles are based on many different ideas. Many games are actually variations of some type of puzzle. One of the more popular puzzle type games is the computer game Tetris. Tetris requires you to stack falling puzzle pieces in order to create entire rows of pieces without leaving voids. Puzzles can be as simple as the crossword puzzle in the morning newspaper or as complicated as the most sophisticated game designed for the computer or popular gaming system.
When I think of a puzzle, I think more in terms of the jigsaw puzzle. I remember many years ago watching my Mother work for days on these puzzles that consisted of thousands of pieces and were mostly beautiful mountain or river scenes. I also have fond memories of my children spending a rainy afternoon utilizing small hands to construct pictures of bright red fire engines and brilliant yellow Big Birds. However, now the bar has been raised greatly with the creation of 3d jigsaw puzzles.
3d puzzles have taken the flat puzzle piece that was once viewed as having only height and width, and added a third dimension comprised of depth. Upon the completion of one of these puzzles, you can stand up and walk around the puzzle to get an entire view from four different sides. These puzzles provide a much greater challenge and also produce many more opportunities for learning. As if trying to turn hundreds of flat pieces into a clear blue sky was not demanding enough, now you can piece together such well known structures as the Eiffel Tower, Big Ben, the Notre Dame Cathedral, or the Empire State Building.
These three dimensional puzzles such as the Puzz 3d puzzles created by the Hasbro Company, really strive to measure the creativity and logic of the solver. They cover dozens of different elements such as mountains, bridges, buildings and other natural and man-made objects. If you have children that spend what you consider to be way too much time playing video or computer games, get your hands on one of these challenging puzzles in an area that is of interest to your child. He or she may just find that the demands of constructing one these three dimensional puzzles exercises their brain in an entirely different way that is just as enjoyable as that favorite shoot 'em up game they usually play.
